Thailand customs regulations for a household move: what is allowed in, and on what conditions
Thai Customs lets a household bring its goods in duty-free once, under conditions that are precise and easy to fail by a month or a document. This page sets out those conditions, the papers the officer asks for, and the rules for pets, vehicles and what must not be in the container. Asia Relocation Thailand does the clearance; this is what it rests on.
Most delays at a Thai port are not caused by the goods. They are caused by a date a month short, a work permit with too little validity left, or a packing list that says one thing while the carton says another. The allowance itself is generous; the conditions around it are where the file is won or lost.
This page restates those conditions in plain words, so that what to ship, and when, is decided before the container is sealed rather than argued at the quay: used household goods, the documents, pets and vehicles, the travel allowances, and what must not be in the load at all.
Asia Relocation Thailand has cleared households into the country since 2011 with its own documentation team in Bangkok. We prepare the declaration to match the inventory line for line, and we tell you in advance what will not clear, which is worth more than any speed at the port.
What Thai Customs requires, and what remains yours to prove
The left column is the rule. The right column is what you have to bring to it: the rule does not bend, the file does.
The conditions for a duty-free import
- Residence abroad of at least twelve consecutive months before the move.
- Goods owned and used for at least six months: used household goods and personal effects, not new purchases.
- Arrival of the shipment within six months of the owner's own arrival in Thailand.
- One air shipment and one sea shipment, and one unit of each kind of electrical appliance; a duplicate may attract duty.
- Once per lifetime: the allowance is not repeated on a second posting.
Every condition is a date or a count. We check yours before a single carton is packed.
What you provide
- The original passport with the Thai visa, valid, and the work permit with at least a year of validity.
- A detailed, itemised packing list that matches the cartons, and the bill of lading or air waybill.
- The import declaration form issued by Thai Customs, prepared with us from the list.
- The decisions that do not belong to the officer: which duplicate appliance stays behind, whether the car travels at all, what the pet's timeline allows.
Incomplete or inconsistent papers are the usual cause of delay and of storage charges at the port.
Five categories, five different treatments at the border
The same container can hold goods that clear in an hour and goods that never should have been in it.
Used household goods and personal effects
Furniture, kitchenware, clothes, books, the contents of a home. Duty-free under the conditions above, labelled as such on the shipment, and declared line for line against the packing list.
Motor vehicles
A car is not a personal effect. It carries its own duties, permits and inspection, and it should never share a customs file with a household shipment: a vehicle held at the port holds the furniture with it.
Pets
At least four months old, with an import permit from the Department of Livestock Development obtained between seven and sixty days before arrival, and a health certificate endorsed in the country of origin. Quarantine is at the officer's discretion; a healthy animal usually walks out.
Restricted and dutiable items
Firearms, certain medicines, plants, antiques and cultural artefacts, items bearing the national flag or royal insignia, shortwave radios, unlicensed medical equipment, gold and silver, Buddha heads: permits, duties, or refusal. Alcohol and tobacco above the travel allowance are dutiable.
Prohibited items
Narcotics and psychotropic substances, counterfeit currency and goods, obscene material, electronic cigarettes and hookahs. Not restricted, not dutiable: refused, with the rest of the shipment held while they are found.
Won before the container arrives
-
Eligibility, against your dates
Months abroad, arrival date, visa and permit validity. If a condition is short by a month, it is better to know before the goods are packed than at the port.
-
The packing list
Itemised as the cartons are filled, with duplicates of appliances and any restricted item flagged and decided on. The list is the document every later check is made against.
-
The declaration
Prepared from the list, with the passport, the permit and the shipping document assembled into one consistent file before the vessel or the aircraft leaves.
-
Inspection and release
Our team attends the clearance in Bangkok, answers the officer with the file, and settles any duty a declared item attracts.
-
Delivery
Released goods go from the port to your home on the same file, with the pet and the vehicle, if any, arriving on their own timelines rather than holding the furniture.
Four movers the rules treat differently
The expatriate family arriving on a first posting
The textbook case for the allowance: a year abroad, a used home, one container. The work is making dates and papers line up.
The returnee, or the second posting
The allowance is once per lifetime. Someone who used it before, or a Thai national coming home, is a different file, and we say so before quoting.
Corporate transferees and HR teams
A policy that pays the move, and a compliance question underneath it: the permit's validity, the duplicate appliances, the company car.
Households with a pet or a car
Two special cases with their own authorities and their own clocks. Planned as separate files from the first call, so neither holds the container.
Where the file is decided
Sea freight through Laem Chabang and the Bangkok port, air freight through Suvarnabhumi, the pet permit from the Department of Livestock Development.
Household containers arrive by sea at Laem Chabang or Bangkok, and by air at Suvarnabhumi. The customs office at each is where the declaration meets the inventory, and where a consistent file clears while an inconsistent one waits at a daily storage charge. Our documentation team is in Bangkok and attends the clearance.
Pets follow a second authority, the Department of Livestock Development, whose permit must exist before the animal flies. Vehicles follow a third path with their own duties. Three clocks, three files, one coordinator.
