Thailand work permit, filed with your employer and kept in step with your visa

A work permit names a company, a position and an address, and it is granted by the Department of Employment, not by the embassy that stamped your visa. Asia Relocation Thailand prepares the employer's side, then yours, and keeps permit and visa on the same calendar for as long as the job lasts.

2documents, two authorities
1employer, position and address per permit
2channels: standard, or promoted company
1coordinator, first filing to cancellation

Most people expect the work permit to follow the visa. In Thailand the order is the other way round: the Department of Employment looks at the company and the job first, and the Thai post abroad asks for the outcome of that review before it issues an employment visa. A file that starts with the passport has started at the wrong end.

The permit is also narrower than it sounds: one person, one position, one employer, one address. Every change to those facts is a change to the permit, and companies that reorganise without telling anyone discover it at renewal, which is the expensive moment.

Asia Relocation Thailand files work permits for arriving staff and for the companies that hire them, from a desk in Bangkok that deals with the offices in person. One coordinator prepares the employer's documents, aligns the visa and follows the file to its closing.

The perimeter

Carried on the permit file, and what a sister page carries

A work permit in Thailand touches the visa, the company's paperwork and sometimes the Board of Investment. Each lives on its own page.

Handled by us

  • Eligibility, before any form: whether the position, the Thai company and your profile can carry a permit as the rules are applied today.
  • The employer's side: the company documents the Department of Employment expects, prepared with your HR contact, and the pre-approval the visa post will ask for.
  • Your side: qualifications and personal documents, translated and legalised where the Bangkok office requires it.
  • The permit itself: filed once you are in Thailand, collected, and checked against the job you were hired for.
  • The life of the permit: renewals, amendments when the title or the office changes, and the cancellation that closes the file when you leave.

Each step is dated in writing, and the date moves only when an office moves it.

A different service

  • The visa the permit sits on. The Non-B, and the ED and O categories for those travelling with you, are the non-immigrant visa file.
  • The promoted-company channel. An employer with a Board of Investment promotion files through a different door: BOI immigration support.
  • Staying on once the permit exists. The yearly extension, the re-entry permit before a trip and the address report are additional immigration services.
  • Finding the job. We file against an offer that exists on paper; we do not place candidates.

All three run with one coordinator when a household arrives together.

Situations

Four moments in the life of a permit

Same authority, same Bangkok coordinator. What changes is what has to be proven, and by whom.

A new hire arriving from abroad

The full sequence: the Thai company's file and the position reviewed first, the visa issued abroad against that review, the permit collected after arrival.

First permit

Renewal

Permit and extension of stay come due on dates the job did not choose. We renew against the permit held and align the visa side, so neither document outlives the other.

Yearly

Change of employer, title or address

A new company is a new permit and a realigned stay. A promotion or an office move is an amendment. Both are filed before the change, because a permit that no longer matches reality is a permit at risk.

Amendment

A company under promotion

Employers promoted by the Board of Investment file their foreign staff at the centre in Bangkok where the Immigration Bureau and the Department of Employment sit together. Different documents, its own page.

Promoted employer
How it works

Company first, then the visa, then the card in your hand

  1. Eligibility and the company check

The position, the company's registration and staffing, and your profile. We say whether a permit can be opened and under which channel.

  2. The employer's file and the pre-approval

Prepared with your HR contact and put to the Department of Employment. This is what the visa post abroad will ask to see with your application.

  3. The visa, filed from outside Thailand

The employment category goes through the official e-Visa system with the pre-approval attached. Each post publishes its own list and lead time; we work from the one that will handle your file.

  4. The permit, after arrival

Filed and collected in Bangkok or at the provincial office, and read against the contract. Then the extension of stay is applied for against it, which is where the calendar starts.

  5. Renewals, changes and the closing

We hold the renewal date, file amendments when the job changes, and cancel the permit properly when the assignment ends.

Who it's for

Four sides of the same permit

Companies hiring their first foreign staff

An HR team that has never filed a permit, facing an authority that looks at the company before the candidate. We prepare the employer's side so the first filing is the last attempt.

Transferees with a start date

The assignment letter is signed and the flight is booked. What is missing is the sequence between the two, and someone in Bangkok to run it.

Spouses who intend to work

A dependant status does not carry a permit. A spouse with an offer needs a file of their own, and we tell the household early whether that offer is enough to open one.

Schools and universities

Teachers are filed with a letter from the education authority and a police clearance on top of the usual set, and the school's calendar rarely waits. We work to the term date.

Coverage

Filed where the job is

The office that handles a permit is the one for the place of work: Bangkok for the capital, the provincial offices for Chiang Mai, Phuket, the Eastern Seaboard and elsewhere.

In Bangkok our coordinator deals with the Department of Employment in person and follows how the requirements are applied this month, not only how they were written. Promoted companies are filed at the investment and expat services centre, where the labour and immigration authorities sit side by side.

Outside the capital the permit follows the workplace: a factory on the Eastern Seaboard, a hotel in Phuket, a school in Chiang Mai each file with their own provincial office, and practice differs between them; we confirm with that office first.

FAQ

What employers and employees ask before the first filing

Can I work in Thailand on a tourist visa or a visa exemption?
No. Paid work requires a work permit from the Department of Employment, issued only against a visa category that allows employment, in practice the Non-B. If an offer followed a visit, the route runs through a new visa, and we tell you whether that means leaving Thailand first.
Does the Non-B visa itself let me work?
No. The visa concerns your stay and comes from a Thai post abroad; the permit concerns your job and comes from the Department of Employment. You need both before the first day of work, and the official e-Visa list makes the link explicit: the employment visa is issued against the Ministry of Labour's approval of the permit application.
Who applies, me or my employer?
The employer starts. The company's documents and the position go to the Department of Employment before you travel, and that approval, or the existing permit for a renewal, is what the visa post asks to see. We prepare the company side with HR, then yours.
What happens if I change employer, title or office?
The permit changes with you, because it names the employer, the position and the place of work. A new employer means a new permit and a visa side to realign. A new title or address within the same company is an amendment.
Can my spouse work on a dependant visa?
Not on the dependant status alone. A spouse who wants to work needs a permit of their own, issued against a job with an employer willing to file, and the visa category may have to change with it. We treat the spouse as a separate file and say early whether the offer is enough.
How long does a Thailand work permit take?
It depends on the office, on whether the employer's documents are complete at the first attempt, and on whether the company holds a Board of Investment promotion, which uses a separate channel. We do not quote a number of days that is not ours to promise: you get a sequence with dates, updated in writing when an office changes its practice.
What does it cost?
Official fees vary with the length of the permit; our fee depends on what the company already has in order and on whether dependants are filed alongside. Both are set out in the written quotation before we open the file.
What happens to the permit when I leave the job or the country?
It is cancelled, and the permission to stay granted against it ends with it. Leaving quietly leaves an overstay on your record. We close the permit with the Department of Employment and tell you what your remaining permission is worth.
