Thailand tourist visa: come and look before you commit, with the file done right

A scouting trip is the honest first step of a relocation: walk the neighbourhoods, visit the schools, meet the employer, then decide. Asia Relocation Thailand checks whether your passport needs a visa at all, files the tourist visa (TR) when it does, and plans the step after the visit so that the trip leads somewhere.

The tourist visa is the lightest file in Thai immigration and the one most often filed for nothing. Many passports enter for a short visit without any visa, and the exemption rules were revised again this September. The first thing we do is not to fill a form: it is to check whether your passport needs one, for the length of stay you have in mind, under the rule in force on the day you travel.

When a visa is needed, the category is broader than its name. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issues it for leisure, for conferences and incentives supported by the convention bureau, for a course in Thai cooking, diving or boxing, for a family visit and for medical treatment, each under sixty days and each with its own supporting document.

Asia Relocation Thailand answers the visa-or-exemption question, files the e-Visa to the list of the post that will handle it, and plans what comes after the visit, because a scouting trip that cannot be converted into a stay is a trip that has to be made twice.

The perimeter

What a visit visa covers, and where a stay begins

The line between visiting Thailand and living in it is the line between this page and its sisters. Knowing it before you fly is most of the service.

Handled by us

  • Visa or exemption: your passport and your dates against the rule in force, answered in writing before any fee.
  • The purpose, matched: leisure, conference, course, family visit or treatment, each with the supporting document the post expects.
  • The e-Visa file: passport page, photograph, proof of location, bookings, accommodation or invitation, financial evidence, filed from your country.
  • Single or multiple: chosen on your travel plan, with the difference in documents and fee explained.
  • The step after: whether the visit can become a stay from inside Thailand or must be refiled from abroad, decided before you book.

If your passport needs no visa, we say so and file nothing.

A different service

  • Living here. A job, a school place or family in Thailand is a non-immigrant visa, filed from abroad on a different letter.
  • Working here. Meeting an employer is a visit; working for one needs a work permit and the visa category that carries it.
  • Staying on. Extensions, re-entry permits and the address report belong to additional immigration services.
  • Working remotely from Thailand. That is a different profile with its own programme; our guides on the blog cover it, and this page does not.

When the visit is the first step of a move, one coordinator runs both.

Kinds of visit

Five reasons the tourist category admits

Same visa, different supporting document. The Ministry lists them by purpose.

The scouting trip

Leisure on paper, reconnaissance in fact: districts in Bangkok, schools, the future office. Bookings and accommodation are the file, and what matters is planning the conversion before the trip.

Before a move

Visiting family who live here

Parents or relatives of a resident, for a stay under sixty days, with an invitation from the family in place of a hotel booking. Longer family stays belong to another category.

Family

Conferences and incentives

Meetings, exhibitions and incentive trips supported by the convention bureau, filed on the organiser's documents for the delegate.

Events

A course or a training stay

Diving in Phuket, boxing in Bangkok, a cooking or massage course in Chiang Mai: recreational learning, on the school's letter, for the length of the course.

Learning

Medical treatment

A hospital stay or a course of treatment under sixty days, on the hospital's confirmation, for the patient and often for the person accompanying them.

Treatment
How it works

Exemption checked, purpose matched, e-Visa filed, next step planned

  1. Visa or no visa

Your passport and your dates against the exemption rule in force. If no visa is needed, this is where the file ends, with a written answer.

  2. The purpose and its document

Booking, invitation, school letter or hospital confirmation, whichever the purpose calls for, in the form the post expects.

  3. The e-Visa, from your country

Account, form, uploads and fee on the official system, to the list and the lead time of the post covering where you live.

  4. What the visit leads to

Before you fly, we say whether the visit can turn into a stay from inside Thailand or must be refiled from abroad, so the trip is planned as a bridge.

Who it's for

Four visits that lead somewhere

Households scouting before a transfer

A week in Bangkok to see the districts and the schools before the assignment is signed, with the long-stay route already sketched.

Parents visiting expat children

Relatives of a resident, invited by the family, whose passport may or may not need a visa for the length they have in mind.

Delegates and incentive groups

A company sending a team to a conference or an incentive week in Thailand, with one file per traveller and one counterpart for HR.

People coming for a course

A diving certification, a boxing camp, a cooking school: a recreational stay on the school's letter, for as long as the course runs.

Where it is filed

Decided abroad, before the flight

The tourist visa is issued by the Thai post covering your country, on the e-Visa system. Nothing is filed at the airport in Bangkok, Phuket or Chiang Mai for this category.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs runs the e-Visa for applicants who are outside Thailand, and each embassy or consulate publishes its own document list and its own lead time. The confirmation arrives by email and is shown to the airline and to the immigration officer on arrival; the passport is no longer handed in.

What happens in Thailand is the exemption, for the passports that enjoy it, and any extension or change of category afterwards, at the Immigration Bureau office for the province where you are staying. Our Bangkok desk confirms current practice there before you plan around it.

FAQ

What visitors ask before booking the flight

Do I need a tourist visa for Thailand at all?
It depends on your passport and on how long you intend to stay. Many nationalities enter for a short visit without a visa, and the exemption scheme was revised in September of this year. We check your passport against the rule in force on the day you travel, and we only file a visa where one is needed.
Can I work, or look for work, on a tourist visa?
You can meet an employer, but you cannot work. Paid work needs a work permit, issued only against a visa category that allows employment. If an offer follows the visit, the route runs through a non-immigrant visa, and we tell you whether it can be filed from Thailand or requires leaving first.
Can the visit be extended once I am there?
The Immigration Bureau can extend a visitor's stay in some cases, on a file presented before the current permission ends. Whether it applies to you depends on how you entered and on current practice at the office. We confirm it before you rely on it, because a stay planned around an extension that is refused ends in an overstay.
Can I switch to a long-stay visa without leaving Thailand?
Not in every case. A change of category inside the country exists for some situations; for others the non-immigrant visa has to be applied for from abroad through the e-Visa system. We look at your situation before you fly, so that the scouting trip is planned as a bridge and not as a dead end.
What documents does the tourist visa require?
The official list: the passport's biodata page, a recent photograph, proof of where you currently are, the travel booking, proof of accommodation in Thailand or an invitation from family or friends, and financial evidence. Each post may ask for more, and we work from the list of the post that will handle your file.
Single or multiple entry?
Both exist for the tourist category, with a validity counted in months rather than years. One scouting trip is a single entry; a series of visits over a season is a multiple. We advise on the document list and the fee for each, and you decide.
When should I apply?
From outside Thailand, before you travel, on the official e-Visa system, allowing for the lead time published by the post covering your country. We do not quote a number of days that belongs to the post; we give you its current timing and a date to file by.
What does it cost?
The official fee depends on single or multiple entry and is not refunded if the application is refused. Our fee depends on how many travellers are filed. Both appear in the written quotation before we open the file, and if no visa is needed for your passport we tell you so instead of filing one.
