Visa extension in Thailand, re-entry permits and the ninety-day report: the calendar once you live here

Getting a visa is a project with an end date. Keeping a status valid is not: it runs on dates you did not choose, at the Immigration Bureau, for as long as you stay. Asia Relocation Thailand holds that calendar, from the yearly extension to the address report, so nothing comes due unnoticed.

The half of immigration work that never appears in a relocation brochure happens after the visa is approved. Permission to stay ends on a date printed in your passport, and is extended only if a file is presented before it. Anyone staying beyond ninety days owes the Immigration Bureau an address notification every ninety days. A single-entry permission is spent the moment you fly out unless a re-entry permit came first.

None of these obligations sends a reminder. They come due whether or not anyone is watching, the penalty falls on you rather than on your employer, and most of the trouble we repair started as a diary entry nobody kept. The report and the extension are two different things: the authorities state plainly that one is in no way equivalent to the other.

Asia Relocation Thailand keeps that calendar from an immigration desk in Bangkok that deals with the Bureau in person: extensions started early, re-entry permits before each trip, reports filed on your behalf, a change of category handled when your situation changes.

The perimeter

What the calendar holds, and what belongs to a first visa

This page starts where a visa has already been granted. Obtaining one, or a work permit, is its sisters' work.

Handled by us

  • The extension of stay: the file assembled to what the office accepts today, presented before the date in your passport, for the same purpose the visa was granted on.
  • The re-entry permit: obtained before each departure, single or multiple as your travel demands, so that the trip does not end the stay.
  • The ninety-day report: filed for you as your authorised person, in the window the Bureau allows, with the receipt kept for the next one.
  • A change of category: when a job, a marriage or a retirement changes what your stay is based on, filed inside Thailand where the rules allow it.
  • The closing: a stay ended properly before you leave for good, so that the passport carries no loose end into the next country.

Each item is quoted on its own, and each is dated in writing.

A different service

  • The first visa. Employment, study or family from abroad is the non-immigrant visa file, on the e-Visa system.
  • The permit to work. Its renewal runs on the same calendar as the extension, but it is a labour document with its own page: work permits in Thailand.
  • A short visit. Exemptions and the visitor's category are the tourist visa (TR) page.
  • Long-term resident holders. The Board of Investment's programme runs its own reporting, yearly rather than every ninety days; we compare it when you qualify.

One household, one coordinator: the first visa and the calendar after it are sequenced together.

The obligations

Five dates the Bureau will not remind you of

Same office, same coordinator. What differs is what triggers each one.

The extension of stay

Applied for before the permission in your passport expires, against the purpose the visa was granted on: the job, the family, the retirement. The first extension also counts as your ninety-day notification.

Yearly, usually

The re-entry permit

Obtained before you leave the country, single for one trip or multiple for a year of travel. Without it, a single-entry permission is spent at the departure gate in Bangkok.

Before each trip

The ninety-day address report

Owed every ninety days by anyone staying that long, within seven days before or after the due date, at the Bangkok office or the provincial one. Leaving and re-entering resets the count to zero.

Every ninety days

The change of category

A visitor who found a job, a spouse who married, an employee who retired: the basis of the stay has changed, and where the rules allow it the category is changed inside Thailand rather than by leaving.

When life changes

The departure

A stay closed properly, with the work permit cancelled and the permission understood, so that leaving Thailand does not become an overstay on your record.

Leaving for good
How it works

Dates taken, files started early, receipts kept

  1. The calendar, built from your passport

Permission expiry, next report date, planned trips. Every date the household owes, written down once and held by us.

  2. Files started early

An extension begins before the bank letter is due, not after, so that a missing document is still a problem with a solution.

  3. Filed in person, on your behalf

Our Bangkok desk presents the extension, obtains the re-entry permit and files the report as your authorised person, at the office your address belongs to.

  4. Receipts kept, dates reset

Each filing produces a receipt the next one depends on. We keep them, and we move the report date when a trip abroad resets the count.

Who it's for

Four residents with dates to keep

Employees on a yearly extension

The permission renewed against the job each year, in step with the work permit, and a re-entry permit for every business trip out of Bangkok.

Retirees in Hua Hin, Chiang Mai or the islands

An extension a year and a report every ninety days, at the provincial office, with the financial evidence prepared the way that office reads it.

Dependants whose status follows someone else's

A spouse and children whose extension depends on the principal's, and whose dates we keep on the same calendar so nobody's lags behind.

Frequent travellers

Regional roles that leave Thailand every few weeks: a multiple re-entry permit, and a report date that moves every time the count resets.

Which office

The Bureau for your address, not the one nearest our desk

Residents of Bangkok, Nonthaburi and Pathum Thani report to the Bangkok office; everyone else to the immigration office for their province.

The Immigration Bureau assigns each foreigner to the office for the place they live, and the extension, the report and the re-entry permit are filed there. Bangkok handles the capital and its two neighbouring provinces; Chiang Mai, Phuket, Pattaya, Hua Hin and Samui each have their own office, and practice differs.

Our desk deals with the Bangkok office in person and follows how the provincial ones apply the requirements this month. When a client moves from Sukhumvit to Phuket, the office changes with the address, and so does the file we prepare.

FAQ

What residents ask once the visa is in the passport

Is the ninety-day report the same as a visa extension?
No, and the authorities say so in as many words: the notification of staying beyond ninety days is in no way equivalent to an extension. The report is an address notification owed every ninety days; the extension is what keeps your permission to stay alive. We track both.
What happens to my stay if I leave the country?
A permission granted for a single entry is spent when you fly out, unless a re-entry permit was obtained before departure. Separately, leaving and re-entering resets the ninety-day count to zero. So a trip abroad needs a permit beforehand and a new report date afterwards, and we set both.
Can someone file the ninety-day report for me?
Yes. The notification can be made in person, by a person you authorise, or by registered mail, within seven days before or after the due date. We file it as your authorised representative for as long as you stay, and keep the receipt, needed for the next one.
When does the extension of stay have to be filed?
Before the current permission ends, on the date printed in your passport, with a file the office accepts on the day. The first extension you apply for also counts as your ninety-day notification. We start early enough that a missing bank letter is still a problem with a solution.
Can I change from one visa category to another without leaving Thailand?
For some situations, yes; for others the new category has to be applied for from abroad. Which case applies depends on how you entered and on what you are changing to, and we tell you before you rely on either answer.
What if I miss the report or overstay?
A late report carries a fine, and a larger one if it is discovered rather than declared. An overstay is a heavier matter, with consequences that follow the passport. Tell us the day you notice: both are easier to repair early than late.
Do long-term resident visa holders report too?
Differently. The Board of Investment's long-term resident visa replaces the ninety-day report with a yearly one and exempts its holders from re-entry permits. Those are among the reasons the programme exists; we compare it when a client qualifies for more than one route.
What does it cost?
Official fees apply to the extension and to the re-entry permit; the report itself has none. Our fee depends on what we keep for you over the year, from a single extension to the full calendar for a household. It is set out in the written quotation, per item.
