Pet transport in Thailand, planned backwards from the arrival date
The flight is the short part. What decides when a dog or a cat can leave Thailand is the veterinary file the arriving country demands, and the export permit the Thai authorities issue before it. Asia Relocation Thailand builds that calendar first, then books.
A pet is the one thing in a move with a schedule of its own. Furniture waits in a warehouse; an animal cannot. Its journey runs on a medical file with dates in it, and those dates are set by the country it is flying to.
So we start at the far end. Australia and much of Europe require a rabies antibody test and a waiting period counted in months; others accept a current vaccination and a certificate signed inside a narrow window before departure. Read the wrong way round, the same file produces a cancelled flight.
The Thai side is orderly once you know it: a veterinary health certificate and an export permit from the Department of Livestock Development, endorsed in sequence. Asia Relocation Thailand prepares both, works the cargo desks at Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket, and keeps one coordinator on the file from the first vet appointment to the crate being opened.
What we take on, and where a vet takes over
An animal's move is shared between a coordinator and a clinic. Knowing which is which keeps the dates honest.
Carried by the service
- The destination's rulebook, read first — vaccination, testing and certificate windows turned into a dated plan.
- The Thai file: health certificate and Department of Livestock Development export permit, or the import permit when the animal is arriving.
- A crate sized to your animal, IATA-compliant, delivered early enough to become familiar rather than a surprise.
- The booking, with the airline's conditions for the route checked before the cargo space is held.
- Airport handling and clearance at Bangkok, Chiang Mai or Phuket, and a handover at the far end to a person, by name.
Every line is written into the quotation, with its limits.
A different service
- The medical acts themselves. Chips, vaccines and certificates are a vet's work: we schedule them, chase them and check them, we do not perform them.
- The furniture that follows. Crossing a border, that is an international move; staying inside Thailand, a local one.
- The car in the driveway. A vehicle is a customs file, not a veterinary one: vehicle transport.
- The office, if the company moves too. That is office relocation, on its own timetable.
- Cover, and a gap in the dates. Moving insurance is quoted separately, and storage in Thailand holds the household while the family settles in.
All of these can run on the same file and the same dates. Say so in the inquiry.
Five ways an animal leaves Thailand, and what decides between them
Size, breed, route and the carrier's rules do the choosing. Preference comes fifth.
As manifested cargo
The animal flies on its own air waybill, checked in at the cargo terminal and tracked as a consignment with a living occupant. It is how most medium and large dogs leave Bangkok, and the option with the widest choice of flights.
Accompanied, in the hold of your flight
Booked against your ticket so the animal travels the same day and lands where you do. Availability depends on the carrier, the aircraft and the season, which is why we ask for your flight before promising it.
In the cabin, for small animals
Some airlines allow a small cat or dog in an approved carrier under the seat, on some routes only. We confirm it in writing for your exact routing: this is the condition that changes most often, and the one people most often assume.
Built to measure
A large breed, an unusual shape or a pair travelling together needs a crate made for it, not pulled off a shelf. It is measured on the animal standing up and delivered early, so the crate stops being new before the day it matters.
The Thai leg, by road
Chiang Mai to Bangkok, or Phuket to the aircraft that serves the route. Our own driver, a vehicle that stays cool, water at every stop: in the hot months the ground portion is the part worth planning.
From the destination's rules to a crate opened at the far end
-
The arriving country first
We read what the destination demands before we look at flights: microchip standard, rabies history, antibody test or not, and the window each certificate has to fall inside. Everything after this step is scheduled against it.
-
The veterinary timetable
Chip, vaccinations, tests and the health certificate, in the order that keeps them all valid on the same day. Where a serology test and its waiting period apply, this is the step that sets the departure month.
-
The Thai permit
The Department of Livestock Development export permit for an animal leaving, or the import permit and origin-country certificate for one arriving. Both are prepared in advance rather than chased in the departure week.
-
Crate, airline and booking
The crate is sized on the animal and delivered early. The carrier's conditions for the route are checked in writing, then the space is held — cargo, accompanied baggage or cabin, whichever the animal and the airline allow.
-
Departure day and arrival
Collection, the drive to Bangkok, Chiang Mai or Phuket, cargo check-in and the export formalities. At the other end, clearance and a handover to a named person, with the file closed only once the animal is home.
Four households, four different clocks
Families leaving Thailand for a strict destination
Australia, the United Kingdom, much of Europe. The testing and waiting sequence runs long, so the pet's calendar is usually the first one to be fixed and the last to move.
Arrivals bringing an animal into the country
Here the import permit and the origin certificate do the work, and the country the animal is flying from decides whether anything further applies on landing.
Diplomats and NGO staff
Postings that end on a date somebody else set. We work the veterinary sequence back from it and say early, in writing, if the two cannot be made to meet.
Thai residents leaving with their animals
Studying, working or retiring abroad, with a dog or a cat that is not staying behind. The Thai half is the familiar part; the destination's rules are where we earn our keep.
Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket — and your door before them
We collect anywhere in Thailand and fly from whichever airport serves the route properly.
Bangkok carries the widest choice of routes and the most cargo services for animals, which is why most journeys start there whatever the province. Chiang Mai and Phuket save a long drive when the routing allows it; when it does not, the drive is ours to organise.
That ground portion deserves more attention than it gets, and in the hot season it deserves most of it: a crate standing in the sun at a kerbside is a worse moment than any flight. Our vehicle stays cool, stops are planned around water, and the animal reaches the terminal with time in hand.
