Non-Immigrant Visas · Thailand

Thailand non-immigrant visa: B, ED or O, chosen by what you will actually do

Employment, study and family each have a letter, and the letter decides everything that follows: which documents the post abroad asks for, what you may do once here, and how the stay is extended. Asia Relocation Thailand confirms the category first, then builds the e-Visa file for you and for the people travelling with you.

2steps: the visa abroad, the extension here

A non-immigrant visa for Thailand is not one product with three flavours. The B is granted against a job or a business that exists on paper, the ED against enrolment at a named institution, the O against a family relationship or, past fifty, against the means to live here without working. Each purpose has its own document list.

The mistake we repair most often is a category chosen for the length of stay it seems to promise. The visa itself is short, counted in months; the year comes later, from the Immigration Bureau, as an extension granted against the same purpose. A file built on the wrong letter stops at that second step.

Asia Relocation Thailand confirms the category against what you can actually document, prepares the e-Visa application to the list of the post that will handle it, and files the spouse and children on the same calendar as the principal applicant, from an immigration desk in Bangkok.

The perimeter

What the visa file carries, and what belongs to its neighbours

A non-immigrant visa is the entry ticket. The permit to work, the extension and the visitor's alternative each have their own page.

Handled by us

  • The category, decided first: B, ED or O, matched to the job, the enrolment or the relationship you can prove.
  • The supporting letter: from the Thai employer, the institution or the resident family member, drafted to what the post expects.
  • The e-Visa application: filed from abroad on the official system, to the post's own document list.
  • Dependants: spouse and children on the O category, filed alongside the principal applicant.
  • The step after entry: the extension of stay with the Immigration Bureau in Thailand, planned before you land.

If the category you want is not the one your documents support, we say so before the fee is paid.

A different service

  • Permission to work. The Non-B is the visa; the job needs its own permit from the Department of Employment: work permits in Thailand.
  • A short visit. Scouting the city or meeting the employer is a visitor's entry, covered by the tourist visa (TR) page.
  • Keeping the status alive. Extensions, re-entry permits and the address report once you live here: additional immigration services.
  • Promoted companies. Staff of a Board of Investment company enter by a separate channel, on its own page.

One household, one coordinator: the four files are sequenced together.

The categories

Three letters, five lives

What the Ministry of Foreign Affairs asks for changes with the purpose.

Employment with a Thai company

The B issued against a job: the post asks for the Ministry of Labour's approval of the work permit application, or the existing permit at renewal. Single entry; the year comes from the extension granted in Thailand once the permit exists.

Non-B

Business visits and board meetings

The same letter for someone who does not take a job: an invitation from the company in Thailand, single entry for one trip or multiple entry for a year of visits. No employment.

Non-B, visits

Study, from primary school to a language course

Enrolment at a school, a university or a licensed short course, proven by a letter from the institution and, for schools, from the education authority. Leave the course and the ground for the visa goes with it.

Non-ED

Joining family who live in Thailand

A spouse, a child or a parent of someone resident here, Thai or foreign. The relationship is proven by civil documents, and the financial evidence follows a different rule depending on whether the family is Thai.

Non-O, family

Living here past fifty, without working

A short Non-O, a one-year O-A with medical certificate and insurance, or a five-year O-X on a larger deposit. All three exclude employment of any kind, which the embassy states plainly.

Non-O, long stay
How it works

Category, letter, e-Visa, then the counter in Bangkok

  1. The situation, read honestly

What you will do in Thailand, who is coming, and what you can prove today. The category follows, and we say when the documents do not support the one you had in mind.

  2. The supporting letter

From the employer, the institution or the family member, in the form the post expects. This is the document that carries the file.

  3. The e-Visa, filed from your country

Account, form, uploads and fee on the official system. The post covering your residence sets the list and the timing; we work from its current requirements.

  4. Entry, then the extension

You enter on the visa; the long stay is applied for at the Immigration Bureau against the same purpose, on a date we have already put in the calendar.

Who it's for

Four households, three letters

Transferees and their dependants

A B for the employee, an O for the spouse and children, filed together so that the family lands with the same permission as the person who was hired.

Students and language learners

A university place in Bangkok, a school year, a licensed Thai-language course: the ED is issued against the letter, which has to say what the post wants.

Spouses of Thai nationals

The O built on a marriage or a Thai child, with a financial rule of its own. The one category where the family's nationality changes the document list.

People past fifty settling in Thailand

Chiang Mai, Hua Hin or the islands, on an O, an O-A or an O-X, chosen by what can be documented and by how long you intend to stay before the next renewal.

Where it is filed

Abroad first, then the Immigration Bureau nearest your address

The visa is issued by the Thai post covering your country of residence. The extension is handled in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Pattaya or wherever you settle.

Two administrations, two places. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through its posts abroad, decides the visa on the e-Visa system, and each post publishes its own list and lead time; we work from the one that will handle your file.

Once you are in Thailand the file moves to the Immigration Bureau office for your province: Bangkok for the capital, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Pattaya and others elsewhere. Practice differs between them, and our Bangkok desk confirms it in person.

FAQ

What applicants ask before choosing a letter

What is the difference between the visa and the extension of stay?
The visa is issued abroad by a Thai post and lets you enter for a purpose; its validity is counted in months. The long stay comes afterwards, from the Immigration Bureau inside Thailand, as an extension granted against the same purpose. The right category at step one is what makes step two possible.
Can I apply for a non-immigrant visa while I am in Thailand?
The official e-Visa system only accepts applications from outside the country. Someone already here on a visitor's entry usually has to leave and file from abroad, though a change of category inside Thailand exists for some situations. We tell you which case you are in first.
Does a Non-B visa mean I can start working?
No. The Non-B is the category employment sits on, but work itself requires a permit from the Department of Employment, and the post abroad asks for the Ministry of Labour's approval before issuing the visa. Two documents, two authorities.
Which family members can join me, and on what?
A spouse and children join on the Non-O category as dependants of a resident, with the relationship proven by marriage or birth certificate and the resident's status shown. The financial evidence differs depending on whether the family in Thailand is Thai or foreign.
I am over fifty and not working. Which category applies?
Three exist: a short Non-O for retirement, the one-year O-A, and the five-year O-X, each with its own financial, medical and insurance conditions. All three prohibit employment. We compare them against what you can document today.
Can a student on an ED visa take a job on the side?
Not on the ED alone. The category is tied to enrolment at the institution that issued the letter, and employment needs its own permit and a category that carries it. If the plan is to study first and work later, we say at the start that the route between the two is not automatic.
How long does it take?
Each Thai post publishes its own document list and lead time, and the e-Visa file is processed by the one covering where you live. We do not quote a number of days that belongs to someone else: you get the post's current requirements and a dated sequence.
What does it cost?
The official fee depends on the category and on single or multiple entry; our fee depends on how many people are filed and whether the extension is included. Both appear in the written quotation. The post's fee is not refunded if an application is refused, one more reason to confirm the category first.
