Car leasing in Vietnam, on a term that can move

An assignment that may be extended or cut short is a poor reason to own a car. Asia Relocation Vietnam leases the vehicle with insurance and maintenance kept on our side, and the arrangement follows your dates instead of fixing them.

Postings in Vietnam move. A two-year assignment becomes three, or ends in eight months because a project closed or a plant opened elsewhere. That is ordinary here, and the strongest argument against buying: ownership sets a horizon your contract never agreed to. A lease borrows the vehicle for as long as the work lasts, and stops.

Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi are two different driving propositions, not one country with two addresses, and corporate life does not stay inside either. A car that spends its week in city traffic and one that runs out to a provincial site are not the same vehicle; pretending otherwise makes a lease feel wrong six months in.

Asia Relocation has worked in the region since 2011 and opened its Asia Relocation Vietnam operations in 2022; leasing sits in the same country team as the rest of the file. Insurance, registration, maintenance and emergency support stay on our side for the term; what you keep is the car and one phone number.

The perimeter

What is inside the monthly figure, and what is outside it

The comparison that matters is not the figure. It is the list of things that stop being your problem.

Carried by the lease

  • The vehicle, maintained and road-ready, in the segment your distances actually call for.
  • Insurance — collision, theft and liability — carried by the lessor rather than by you.
  • Full maintenance, booked and followed by us, with the servicing interval set against the mileage you really do.
  • Roadside assistance and a replacement vehicle when yours is off the road.
  • The Vietnamese registration and the compliance that goes with it, for the whole term.
  • A term that can be changed — extended, shortened or handed back, through one coordinator.

Every item is written into the quotation, with its limits.

Stays with you

  • Running the car — fuel, tolls, parking. Nobody leases those away.
  • Anything the driver is personally liable for, a traffic fine being the ordinary case.
  • Your licence. We advise on what is accepted in Vietnam; obtaining it is personal to you.
  • Moving a car you already own into or out of the country. That is vehicle transport, a different service.
  • Ownership at the end. A lease returns the car; if you mean to own one, say so at the quote stage.

If something you expected is on neither side, ask.

The fleet

The vehicle follows the distance, not the badge

Four categories, and the one that fits is decided by how far the car goes in an ordinary week.

Sedan

The city default. A week made of short journeys in dense traffic, where a smaller footprint is worth more than a larger boot, and where the car spends more time stationary than moving.

Self-drive

SUV

For households and staff whose week leaves the city — the road out to a site in Binh Duong, or the run north from Hanoi towards Hai Phong. Ground clearance and mileage tolerance matter more here than extra seats.

Self-drive or driver

Premium model

For assignees who arrive at client sites and partner offices, where the car is part of how the meeting starts. Usually with a driver, for the length of a mandate.

Usually with driver

Corporate fleet

Several vehicles on one agreement, one account contact, one point of billing. Cars are added and returned as people rotate, which in Vietnam is the point, not an exception.

Company
How it works

How the arrangement runs, end to end

  1. The dates, including the uncertain ones

City, term, and the distances the car will cover. Tell us what is not settled: a lease built around an uncertain date costs less to change than one built around a date you pretended to be sure of.

  2. Selection and terms

What is genuinely available in your segment in that city, with the perimeter written out. If two options are close, we say which one we would take.

  3. Vietnamese paperwork

Insurance, registration and the local compliance are put in place and stay with us for the term. We tell you what we need from you before you sign.

  4. Delivery and hand-over

The car comes to your address in Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi. The hand-over covers how it works, what to do if something goes wrong, and what the lease says.

  5. The changes, and the end

Maintenance is booked by us. If your dates move — either way — the lease moves with them as far as notice allows. At the end you hand the car back or renew.

Who it's for

Four ways a term goes wrong, and what a lease does about it

The posting that gets extended

Two years becomes three. Extending a lease is a phone call; having bought the wrong car for year three is not. The vehicle can change too if the household has.

The project that closes early

The reason companies lease here rather than buy. Vehicles are handed back as people leave, and the fleet shrinks without anyone having to find a buyer in Vietnam for a used car.

The household that arrives before the address

A car is needed while the search for a home is still running. If we are also handling the destination services, the vehicle is scheduled against the arrival rather than after it.

The remit that grows a second site

A city job becomes a city-and-province job, and the sedan that suited Ho Chi Minh City stops suiting the week. Changing segment mid-term is part of the arrangement.

Coverage

Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and the roads out of both

Delivery to your address in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.

The two cities are the base; the distances out of them are what to settle before signing. Requirements rarely stop at the city limit. Say so at the quote stage and Asia Relocation Vietnam sets the segment, the mileage allowance and the servicing interval for that week. The hand-over happens where you live.

FAQ

The questions that come up before signing

What happens to the lease if my assignment in Vietnam is cut short?
You tell the coordinator on your file as soon as you know, and we work the change through the agreement rather than around it. This is the reason most of our clients lease here instead of buying: a posting that can move in either direction is a poor reason to own a car. What we ask is notice — the earlier it comes, the more room there is to change the arrangement without cost.
And if it is extended instead?
The same conversation, in the other direction: extend the term, or move to a different vehicle if the household has changed shape in the meantime. Renewal is arranged with the same coordinator, and it does not restart the file from nothing. It is worth telling us early even when the extension is not yet confirmed.
What do I need to lease a car in Vietnam as a foreign resident?
A valid driving licence accepted in Vietnam and proof of your address — a tenancy agreement or a utility bill in your name. Depending on the vehicle and the term, a deposit or a guarantor may apply. With a driver, the licence stops being your problem at all — worth weighing if yours is not recognised here.
What does the monthly payment cover?
The vehicle, its insurance, its scheduled maintenance, roadside assistance, and a replacement car if yours is off the road. The Vietnamese registration and the compliance that goes with it stay with us for the whole term. Not covered: fuel, tolls and parking, and anything the driver is personally liable for.
Can the car be used for the drive out to a provincial site?
Yes, and it is worth saying so at the quote stage rather than after. A car whose week is a city commute in Ho Chi Minh City and a car that runs out to an industrial site in Binh Duong or up to Hai Phong are not the same lease: the mileage, the segment and the servicing interval all move. Tell us the route and the segment follows from it.
Do you lease in Hanoi as well as Ho Chi Minh City?
Both, and they are genuinely different driving cities rather than two branches of one market. What is available in each, and what it makes sense to take, is answered city by city at the quote stage. Delivery is to your address in either.
Can a company lease several vehicles under one agreement?
Yes. A fleet is scoped against headcount, sites and entitlement, with one account contact and one point of billing rather than a folder of separate contracts. Vehicles are added and returned as people arrive and leave, which in Vietnam happens often enough to be the point of the arrangement rather than an edge case.
How much does it cost to lease a car in Vietnam?
It depends on the vehicle segment, the length of the lease, and the distances the car will actually cover. We would rather name those three than publish a figure that turns out not to be yours, so the quotation comes in writing with the perimeter set out in full.
