Temporary Resident Card · Vietnam

The temporary resident card: one status instead of a queue of extensions

Extending a visa over and over is not a plan, it is a recurring interruption. The card is the instrument for people who intend to stay, and it is applied for with proof of where you live. Asia Relocation Vietnam builds the file around that, in-house.

Filed at the Immigration Department Work, family and long-term stays Applications and renewals
3things we read first: visa status, employment, family ties
1address, read across the whole file before anything is lodged
0extensions to queue for: the card replaces that cycle
1renewal date, taken the day the card is issued

If you arrived in Vietnam on something shorter and renewed it until the renewing became the problem, this is the page for that. Extensions mean dates to remember, and uncertainty dropped into a settled life. The card ends that, and it is applied for with a valid passport, the visa or work permit behind you, and proof of where you live.

That last item is what makes this page different from the rest of the silo: proof of where you live, which often rests on paperwork signed in a hurry, in a language the applicant does not read.

Asia Relocation Vietnam starts from that address rather than from the form. We read the status behind you, establish whether the documents that place you somewhere hold together, file with the Immigration Department, and take the renewal date the day the card issues.

The file

What a card file is made of, and what it borrows from elsewhere

Everything on the left is ours; everything on the right existed before we started.

Carried by us

  • The honest assessment. Whether your visa status, your employment or your family ties support a card, and whether the timing is right.
  • The address file. The documents that place you at a home in Vietnam, checked against each other and against your passport before anything is lodged.
  • The household, member by member. Each person read on their own basis, rather than one file assumed to carry the rest.
  • The filing and the follow-up. Lodged with the Immigration Department and chased, with you told what stage it has reached.
  • The renewal. Diarised at issue and opened early, because a card noticed late has no elegant remedy.

Quoted per household in writing before the file opens.

Already settled, or settled elsewhere

  • The right to be employed. Decided on the labour side, on the Vietnam work permit page.
  • The visa the card rests on. Employment entries are handled at LD working visa.
  • Travelling while resident. That is an exit and re-entry permit, filed separately.
  • The end of the card. When you leave or your status changes, see residence card cancellation.
  • Finding the home itself. Viewings, terms and a signature belong to home search, and a lease signed with this file in mind is a better lease.

Tell us which of these is missing and we open it for you.

Five households

Five ways people arrive at a card in Vietnam, and none of them is the form

What differs is what already exists on paper.

The employee whose posting became a life

Hired, settled, still renewing. The employment behind the file is solid; what needs work is the tenancy signed in the first weeks.

First card

A household applying together

A partner, children, sometimes a parent. We read each on their own basis and file them as one coordinated set rather than four unrelated applications.

Family

A card coming up for renewal

The date is known and nothing about the life has changed — which is exactly when a file is left too late. We open it early, from the record we hold.

Renewal

Something underneath has moved

A new home, a new passport, an employer that restructured. We put the change to the Immigration Department rather than assume what it requires, before the file needs repairing.

Change

Years of extensions, and enough of it

People who have renewed so often they assume the card is out of reach. It is worth having the file read before assuming either way.

Switch
The order of work

The home before the form

  1. Read what is already behind you

Your visa status, your employment and your family ties in Vietnam, read together. That tells us whether to open the file now or later.

  2. Open the address file

We ask about the home first, because it is the evidence you cannot fix quickly. Documents that disagree are dealt with now, not at the counter.

  3. Assemble the household as one set

Passports, the status behind each person, and evidence of the life the family leads here. Lodged together, so the department sees one coherent picture.

  4. File and follow it

Submitted to the Immigration Department and pursued afterwards. You are told where the file stands, including when the answer is that nothing has moved.

  5. Take the renewal date at issue

The moment the card exists we record when it stops existing, and come back to you before that date rather than after somebody notices it.

Who applies

Four residents who stopped counting their expiry dates

Families who are no longer visiting

School terms, a lease renewed twice, furniture bought rather than rented. The paperwork repeats and the life does not, and the card closes that gap.

HR teams tired of four dates per person

A permit, a visa, an extension and a card each running on their own calendar. One coordinated file gives a mobility team one date to track per employee.

People with Vietnamese family

A spouse, children born here, relatives nearby. Family ties are among the things we read, and this is the household where the evidence is a life rather than a contract.

Residents who travel for work

Anyone whose passport is needed on short notice feels every extension. A settled status removes most of those moments from the diary.

The address

A card file has to say where you actually live

The part of this file that is about where you live, and the papers that place you there.

Proof of where you live in Vietnam is part of the application, and the part households underestimate. A lease taken in a rush, a name spelled differently on two documents, an apartment held by a relative — each is ordinary, and each is something we settle first. We ask about the home in the first conversation.

We run these files for residents of Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Da Nang, the three cities Asia Relocation Vietnam covers, where the person advising you is the person who lives there rather than a coordination desk in another country. Outside those cities we confirm how the file will be handled before we quote.

FAQ

What long-stay residents ask before they stop renewing

I already hold a valid visa. Why would I want a card as well?
Because a card replaces the cycle of extending that visa again and again. We assess it against how long you genuinely intend to stay rather than against your next expiry date, and if the honest answer is a short posting we say so.
What counts as proof of where I live in Vietnam?
The documents that place you at a specific address. We ask about the tenancy first and read those papers against each other and against your passport before anything is lodged, rather than at a counter.
Can my spouse and children hold one too?
The card exists for people staying for work, for family and for other long-term purposes, and family ties are among the things we read. We read each member of the household on their own basis rather than assuming one person's status carries everyone.
What happens if we move house, or if my employer changes?
Tell us before it happens. What a move or a change of employer requires of a card already issued is a question we put to the Immigration Department, not one we answer from assumption. Raised in advance there is time to act on it; afterwards we are repairing a file.
I have been extending a visa for years. Is it too late to switch?
It is worth asking. The years you have spent renewing are themselves a record of a settled life here, and that is the material the file is built from. We tell you whether a card is now the simpler arrangement.
Can I leave Vietnam and come back while I hold one?
There is a dedicated document for travelling while you are resident, and it is a separate filing on its own page. We prepare it ahead of a trip rather than in the week you fly, because the alternative is discovering the gap at an airport.
What does the card cost, and what does the renewal cost?
Both are quoted in writing against your case: how many people are in the household, what evidence exists, whether the tenancy documents are usable as they stand. We publish no figure, because a figure that fits one household misleads the next.
What if you decide my situation does not support one?
We tell you at the assessment, not after the fee. Part of what you are buying is somebody saying the status behind you is not yet the right foundation, and what would have to change. That answer is worth more than a filing that fails.
